The Social Action Fund supports important initiatives that fulfill the following missions:
1. To address the needs of Toronto’s downtown Jewish community
2. To help build an Israel consistent with our values of fairness, egalitarianism and social justice
3. To protect communities facing discrimination or anti-semitism.
By giving as a community, we have been able to access and enable important work that many of us could not support on our own. Also, through our close associations with recipients and our rigorous tracking, we ensure that initiatives are achieved and goals are fulfilled. This past year, we supported:
In Canada:
• Out Of The Cold: providing core funding to provide food and shelter for Toronto’s homeless
• Jewish Family & Child: funding a community seder for those without suitable family celebrations and sending 15 children in need of physical fitness to Active Camp
In Israel:
• Arava Institute: providing scholarships for Israeli and Arab students to study environmental policy that will impact the entire region
• Leket Israel: providing 16,000 meals for families in need
• Ziv: providing food vouchers for families in sudden financial emergency
• Kav Or: funding the translation of hospital-based educational programming into Arabic
• Aguda: providing supplementary educational assistance for those in the LGBT community
• Green Course: supporting student-led initiatives to promote water conservation
• Hazon Yeshaya: funding 10 vocational training courses for 200 unemployed people to help them find new work
• Ve’ahavta: supporting the rebuilding of Northern Israel following the devastating forest fire of 2011
