Membership

The Narayever is a warm, welcoming multi-faceted downtown shul, under the leadership of Rabbi Ed Elkin. We are a friendly, caring community, where new members are welcomed through an annual reception and Havdalah service. We also have a buddy system, where new members have an opportunity to be matched with current members, to be further welcomed into the shul community.

  • A commitment to promoting the concept of tikun olam through social action projects and by raising funds for tzedakah

  • Israeli focussed activities and more.
     

Services are held on Shabbat at 9:00 a.m., Kabbalat Shabbat every Friday at 6:00 and there is a Sunday minyan at 9:00 for those saying kaddish.  Click here for the membership form.
  
Membership benefits include:

  • Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Marriage Ceremonies, Funerals, Brises and Baby Namings  - The Rabbi is there to consult with members on these important lifecycle events and officiate at the ceremonies.
  • Bar/Bat Mitzvah special programming -  a monthly program is provided in the year preceding the Bar/Bat Mitzvah
  • Pastoral Counselling, Personalized Growth or Coaching - Whether it is to seek spiritual, emotional or practical advice, the Rabbi gives priority to Shul members.
  • High Holiday Tickets - All Shul members receive tickets for themselves and children who are under Bar/Bat Mitzvah age
  • Community Shabbat dinners – A warm Shabbat gathering for members and their families is organized several times a year
  • Cemetery Plots - All Shul members are eligible for a cemetery plot
  • Caring Hesed Services -  for members who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
  • Shul Library - A well-stocked library of non-fiction books and magazines to which members will have free access during operating hours.
  • Yahrzeit Reminders - Members receive mailed reminders noting the day and date prior to the yahrzeit of a loved one.
  • Tax receipts for membership dues.

Types of Memberships

Membership at The First Narayever Congregation is open to anybody in the Jewish community. Membership is for a one-year period beginning Rosh Hashana. Each membership is for one individual and minor children. Payment can be made by cheque or Visa.  High Holy Day Tickets are issued on receipt of payment

Membership includes:

  • Tickets to our High Holy Day Services at the shul and the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre
  • Cemetery privileges
  • Services of our Rabbi at life cycle events and for counselling
  • Voting rights.

 

Membership: $611.00 Includes High Holy Day tickets for one adult, annual dues for one adult and pre B'ney Mitsva children, and Cemetery privileges.

Each new member is also assessed a one-time fee of $600 for the building fund, which may be spread across three years.
 
Student Membership: $118.00 Full time post-secondary students until the age of 30. Please provide proof of your current student status.
        
Post Bar/Bat Children: $36.00 Includes High Holy Day ticket
 
Children's ticket for High Holy Days: $18.00 Although minor children of members are considered members, each child much have his or her own ticket for the High Holy Day services.
 
Friends of Narayever: $54.00 Non-Member category, receive bulletin and other shul materials
 


No one will be turned away based on financial considerations. When financial hardships do not allow payment of the full fee, dues adjustments can be made in confidence by contacting the Membership Chair.
