Volunteer Opportunities

Kensington Gardens

Looking for a place to do a mitzvah?  Join us on the first or third shabbat of most months at Kensington Gardens Nursing Home for a hamishe shortened service with jewish residents as well as fellow Narayeverniks. Our service begins at 11:00 am in the chapel of the south building at 25 Brunswick Ave., just north of College. We sing and pray together for approximately one hour, share wine, challah and  community with about 8 - 10 residents from the home. In addition, we run High Holy day services and celebrate Hanukah. Feel free to drop in and join our Narayever Mitzvah club once in a while or on a regular basis.  Children and dogs are welcome!  Dates of services are always listed on the Narayever Net.  For more information please contact Janis Rubenzahl at jan.r@rogers.com

Out of the Cold

We are delighted by our partnership with the First Interfaith Out of the Cold program located at St. Matthews United Church, 729 St. Clair West. The program has been in place in its present format since 1992 when it started at St. Peter's Church. In 2002 it moved to the present location. This program is managed by a volunteer steering committee and is supported by members of Congregation Darchei Noam, the Newman Centre (UofT), UTS students and community groups. On Thursday nights, 120 guests are offered meals, nursing and foot care, as well as free clothing. The program provides overnight accommodation for 45. Volunteers can participate in all shifts starting at 3 p.m. with breakfast on Friday morning ending at 8 a.m. Lunches are made at the church from 3-6 p.m. High school volunteer hours will be honoured. For additional information, please contact Micky Fraterman at moostra@sympatico.ca.

Castleview-Wychwood Towers

The Narayever volunteers at Castleview-Wychwood Towers create a community for the Jewish residents. We provide Shabbat dinner Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. once a month and celebrate the holidays and provide individual pastoral care to some of the residents. Our next meeting is a celebration of the High Holidays on Sunday, October 2. Please join us! We need your support to continue this valuable service. For more information contact Lori or Ernie Gershon (lori.gershoncapco.ca).
