New Archaelogical Discoveries in Israel

Narayever member Michael Chazan is a Professor at the University of Toronto where he served for ten years as director of the Archaeology Centre. His childhood experiences with archaeology while visiting Israel set him on a path towards a career in archaeology and an unexpected trajectory that now includes annual fieldwork on early human sites in South Africa, along with a continuing engagement with the archaeology of Israel.

In this series of four web seminars Michael will share his understanding of some of recent archaeological discoveries in Israel including a six thousand year old burial cave in the Galilee, the Canaanite palace at Hazor, Philistine feasting at Biblical Gat, the spectacular early synagogue found at Huqoq (where Michael is a member of the research team and U of T students take part in the excavation), and the impact of climate change on Byzantine urban centers in the Negev.

Participants will be given access to a collection of articles for optional enrichment reading to provide the basis for discussion. The seminar will begin with a 20 minute presentation by Michael followed by discussion. This will be a chance for you to learn about some exciting new discoveries and will hopefully provide a brief respite during this difficult period.

Wednesdays May 6, May 13, May 20, May 27, 7:00 pm.
