Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron
Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron
In addition to times of celebration, our community also comes together to acknowledge the suffering and loss experienced by our people. Two important days in our shul year are Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron.
Yom HaShoah is the day on which we honour the memory of those who were murdered in the Holocaust. Each year, at our shul’s commemoration, we light memorial candles, we sing, we pray, we have readings and poetry in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English, and we mention the names of Holocaust victims in our families. Our shul also participates in the yellow candle program, in which members are invited to light yellow candles in their homes in memory of those who perished.
Yom HaZikaron is the memorial day for Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror. Our shul has a ceremony each year led by our Israeli young emissaries, our shinshinim. We pay tribute to those who died, and pray for an Israel at peace.
