Congregant Lesley Simpson has designed a customized course based on her dissertation research about non-material familial Jewish legacy. The course will introduce congregants to the creativity of Jewish memory, and explore what people transmit to their children as well as friends through memoir, history, and wordless music. Lesley would like to create an informal atmosphere with fellow shul members. The format will unfold as four sessions with room for discussion. Lesley would like to invite congregants to come into the space with coffee, tea and questions and engage in an interesting conversation about modes of Jewish memory. The four workshop sessions will explore ways of understanding different modes of Jewish memory. The research begins with the ethical will of Yiddish comic writer Solomon Rabinowitz in 1916 and ends with wordless music in the contemporary moment in Toronto! An ethical will is not a legal will but a letter transmitting non-material legacy. Rabinowitz is intriguing because he asked to be remembered with laughter.
