YOM KIPPUR APPEAL

At Kol Nidre, we appeal to those in attendance to donate to support a range of worthy organizations doing important work – both in the GTA and in Israel.

Last year, funds received from our Yom Kippur appeal enabled us to disburse $59,900 to 14 charities supporting needs in Israel and Canadian organizations dedicated to the theme of fighting discrimination, hate, and polarization in the context of religious identity; the full list of last year’s grantees may be found HERE.

Please support this appeal as generously as you can, so we can continue to do our part as a community to help heal our world. Donations in any amount will help those in need.

Online donations can be made HERE following the conclusion of Yom Kippur.

DONATIONS OF NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS - FOOD DRIVE UPDATE: HOW WE’RE HELPING THIS YEAR

“As we prepare for the High Holidays and reflect on our Yom Kippur fast—a fast we choose—we are reminded that many in our community face hunger daily, with no choice at all. Together, we can help make a real difference.”

In Ontario, over 1 million individuals accessed food banks in 2024, a 25% increase compared with the previous year. The need is clear—and they need our help.

Traditionally, our congregation has held a food drive on Kol Nidre at both the MNJCC and the shul. However, changing circumstances that include security concerns and reduced resources at the food banks (such as fewer trucks available) have made large-scale food collection more difficult.

This year, given the growing need, we are shifting our approach. While the Daily Bread Food Bank still appreciates non-perishable donations, they emphasize that “cash” donations allow them to serve their clients more effectively. And right now, any donation made between now and Yom Kippur will be doubled.

So please don’t just plan to give—actually do it!

For those who would like to continue bringing non-perishable food items, bins will also be available at the shul starting now until the end the High Holidays.

Either way, thank you for helping us feed the hungry.
